The HDD/HTB Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and Horizontal Trenchless Boring (HTB) activities across assigned projects. The role ensures technical accuracy, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and safe delivery of trenchless crossings in line with project specifications and industry standards. The position also provides strategic leadership to HDD/HTB crews, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure quality, cost, and schedule performance.

Under minimal supervision, provide direct instruction and supervision to junior Field Engineers on day-to-day worksite activities.
Provide resolution to a diverse range of complex problems at the drilling site where data analysis requires broad knowledge of the product line.
Under general supervision, provide on-site supervision of the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) process, including projection of bore paths to predetermined target coordinates.
Understand principles of Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) selection and HDD performance, ensuring BHAs are assembled as planned with correct make-up torque, doping, and handling.
Effective HDD Operations Management: Oversee and ensure successful division-wide HDD activities. Ensure 100% achievement of defined HDD outcomes while maximizing processes and procedures to meet organizational expectations for cost-effectiveness, quality, safety, and operational efficiency.
Efficient Project Execution: Lead comprehensive planning, coordination, and execution of HDD projects, collaborating with stakeholders on objectives, timelines, and budgets while ensuring optimal progress and resource allocation.
Effective Team Leadership: Oversee productive HDD teams including drill operators and support staff. Provide mentoring, training, evaluations, and guidance to foster teamwork, safety awareness, continuous improvement, and high productivity.
Optimized Equipment and Resource Management: Oversee utilization and maintenance of HDD equipment and trucks to ensure operational efficiency and reliable inventory management. Ensure preventive maintenance schedules are strictly adhered to, repairs are completed promptly, and all equipment remains at optimal operational performance. Manage effective resource planning and use for maximum output.
Quality Assurance and Client Satisfaction: Establish and maintain stringent quality control systems. Collaborate with Planning and Design Engineers to verify bore route accuracy and alignment. Ensure operations cause no damage to third-party infrastructure while maintaining deployment quality. Maintain regular client communication to address concerns and build strong project relationships.
Safety Culture and Compliance: Promote a robust safety culture through comprehensive protocols and procedures. Conduct routine training ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and minimizing operational risks.
Financial Oversight: Prepare and manage project budgets, monitor expenses, and provide detailed financial reporting for senior management. Identify cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements.
Liaison Management: Serve as liaison across community groups, regulatory agencies, and property owners, ensuring smooth operations and effective issue resolution.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation: Keep current with HDD industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices. Initiate and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency, optimize resources, and drive divisional excellence.
The Job Requirements
Requirements
Academic: University Degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences.
Professional certification or HDD-specific training is an added advantage.
At least 15 years in the Oil and Gas Construction industry, with experience in pipeline / fibre cable installation and at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Extensive experience in HDD operations, including hands-on experience as an HDD drilling superintendent.
Demonstrated experience managing large-diameter pipeline crossings and working in complex geological conditions.
